When I calculate how much of our 10 years has actually been spent in the same room it is astonishing! Mr MOOI and I have been super fortunate to have our work/life balance work together pretty well.
10 years on, 2 spunky kids, countless countries, and several business ventures later with a heart still intact I can offer a few tips for those wishing to combine business and your bestie. (Disclaimer: ours is a work in progress)
• Respect the need to ‘switch off’. This is almost like the tap out in MMA (mixed martial arts). If one of is exhausted, frustrated or lost interest momentarily then the other will give it a rest and leave decision making until later. We use this mostly around our business activities.
• Have defined jobs for the most part and share the middle stuff; we do this for family + household and business. Most of the times defined jobs will happen naturally as you tend to gravitate to what you are good at. Then it’s important for us to pick up each other’s slack when one of us away or super busy.
• Be active together. Bike, walk, swim or surf. We spend time outside moving our bodies every possible day. This is a great time to talk things through without interruption and take time away from being ‘busy’. We laugh, talk passionately (aka argue), plan and just enjoy being. Fresh air is as good for the business as it is for the soul!
